Hair bulb

The hair bulb, also known as the hair bulb, is the lower part of the hair root, which is located in the deepest region of the hair follicle. It has a bulb-shaped structure and surrounds the hair bulb, a small, cone-shaped structure that contains blood vessels that supply the hair bulb with nutrients and oxygen. The hair bulb plays a crucial role in hair growth as it contains the cells that divide and form hair.

Components of the hair bulb

  • Matrix cells : These are located in the hair bulb and are responsible for the production of new hair cells. The rapid division of these cells causes hair to grow.
  • Melanocytes : Within the hair bulb, these cells produce melanin , the pigment that gives hair its color. Different amounts and types of melanin lead to different hair colors.
  • Hair papilla : Contains the blood vessels that supply the matrix cells with the necessary nutrients for hair growth.

Functions of the hair bulb

  • Hair Growth : The hair bulb is the place where hair is formed. The activity of the matrix cells in the hair bulb determines the speed and pattern of hair growth.
  • Hair color : The melanocytes in the hair bulb determine the color of the hair through the production of melanin.
  • Regeneration : The hair bulb enables the cyclical process of hair growth, which is divided into phases of growth (anagen), transition (catagen) and rest (telogen) before the hair falls out and the cycle begins again.

Health and care

Hair bulb health is crucial for strong and healthy hair. Factors such as diet, stress, hormonal imbalances and genetics can influence the health of the hair bulb and therefore hair growth. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals supports the health of the hair bulb. Products and treatments that stimulate the scalp and promote blood circulation can also positively influence hair growth.

Hair bulb problems

Disturbances in the function of the hair bulb can lead to hair loss and other hair problems. Androgenetic alopecia, also known as hereditary hair loss, is one of the most common causes of hair loss that affects the hair bulb by shortening the hair growth phase. Other conditions like Alopecia areata, one Autoimmune disease, which leads to circular hair loss, also directly affect the hair bulb.

Caring for the hair bulb and surrounding structures is essential to maintaining healthy hair growth and overall hair health.
