Hair types

Hair types are often classified based on the texture and shape of the hair. The most widely used classification was developed by hairdresser Andre Walker and includes four main types: Type 1 (straight), Type 2 (wavy), Type 3 (curly) and Type 4 (frizzy). Each major type is further divided into subcategories (A, B, C) based on the width or diameter of the waves or curls. This classification helps to choose suitable care products and styling methods.

Type 1: Straight Hair

  • Type 1A : Very fine and soft with no visible wave or curl pattern.
  • Type 1B : Has slightly more volume and body than Type 1A, with minimal waves.
  • Type 1C : Straight but with slight waviness, especially at the end of the hair strands.

Type 2: Wavy Hair

  • Type 2A : Fine and thin with loose, undefined waves.
  • Type 2B : Medium waves that are somewhat defined and tend to rest on the head.
  • Type 2C : Thick and coarse with very defined, strong waves.

Type 3: Curly Hair

  • Type 3A : Large, loose curls or spiral curls.
  • Type 3B : Medium curls that have more volume and bounce than Type 3A.
  • Type 3C : Dense, tightly packed corkscrew curls.

Type 4: Frizzy hair

  • Type 4A : Soft, fine, tightly curled curls that form an S-pattern.
  • Type 4B : Zigzag curls that are less defined and very dense.
  • Type 4C : Similar to Type 4B, but with even less defined curls and an even higher density; the curls are so tight that the pattern is often not easily recognizable.

Care and styling

Hair care and styling should be tailored to the specific hair type:

  • Straight hair often requires volume-enhancing products and can tend to quickly become greasy.
  • Wavy hair benefits from moisturizing products that reduce frizz without weighing down the waves.
  • Curly hair requires intense moisture to define curls and combat dryness.
  • Frizzy hair requires products that provide ample moisture to nourish the hair structure and improve manageability.

Regardless of hair type, it is important to choose products and methods that support the hair's natural texture and keep it healthy. Regular care, including the use of conditioners, masks, and oil-based products, can help keep hair in its best condition.
